Due to the excessive summer heat the garbage collection schedule will start one hour earlier than usual during the months of July and August.
The Public Works Division is the largest Division of the Public Services Department, employing eleven full time positions. Public Works is supervised by our management team of George O'Neal, Supervisor and Irv Thatcher, Foreman. The Public Works Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of twenty plus miles of the City street system, plus twice a week trash collection. In conjunction with the Trustees maintenance personnel the Public Works Division maintains approximately 130 acres of parks and open space.
Additional services provided by Public Works include fall leaf collection, street sweeping, grass cutting street markings drainage maintenance, and numerous other services to enhance the quality of life for the residents in the City of New Castle.
Obviously during the winter months we provide snow plowing, which leads to an important point. When snowfall is expected, it would greatly enhance our operations if residents would remove their vehicles from the street to allow for easier and more efficient snow plowing from our crews.
Maintenance of roadways and traffic and street signage is a monumental task and we kindly request that you report any "pot holes" or damaged street or traffic signs by calling 322-9813, 322-9808, or you can send me an e-mail at goneal@newcastlecity.org.

We will be implementing a new program this spring by introducing yard waste recycling. We will designate one day a week for a special trash pick up of yard waste such as grass clippings, tree limbs etc. The City will then compost this material and use the compost around our parks and flower beds and trees within the open spaces in the City. This will be a tremendous benefit to the environment of the City, plus it will save money also. Additional details will be forthcoming. Recycling is also available at recycling bins located at 4th and Chestnut Street. The more you recycle, the more you help the environment and reduce our landfill costs.
